10 Anti-Aging Tips for Moms

Written by Ageless Moms on May 29th, 2009

Let’s face it, we’re not getting any younger. But we can do something so we can look younger and stays healthy at the same time.

1. Quit Smoking. Do your skin a favor and quit smoking now. It’s simple as that.

2. Protect your Skin from the sun. Have sunscreen always with you.

3. Eat an antioxidant rich diet. Eating fresh vegetables, fruit and whole grains is a maximum anti aging protection

4. Take a supplement for younger looking skin. Boost your antioxiant with a daily supplement.

5. Add green tea to your day. Recent research findings show that taking sufficient green tea during the day can protect you from all forms of cancer, build your resistance to heart disease and dementia and contribute to your body’s ability to burn fat.

We have a lot of that here, hehe…

6. Moisture and exfoliate. A great anti aging moisturizer, when applied properly, will provide continous hydration – essential for mature skin – and protection from further free radical damage.

7. Exercise more. An excellent anti aging tip.

8. Moderate your alcohol intake. Drink alcohol in moderation.
We love drinking red wine here.

9. Stress less. When you’re under stress your body releases stress hormones which – over a period of time – surpress the immune system and accelerate the aging process.

10. Drink more water. Without sufficient water your skin will dehydrate and essential anti aging nutrients cannot be delivered to your system.

Looking younger, feels great! ;)

4. Continue drinking water throughout the day to avoid retaining water which can cause a puffy, tired appearance. Drink about 64 ounces per day if possible.

5. Dot concealer under your eyes and tap into dark circles.

6. Sweep petroleum jelly across your brow bones directly underneath your eyebrows and across the top of your cheekbones. Exclude powder from your make-up routine which can accentuate creases and wrinkles.

7. Brush your hair and make sure your clothing is clean and pressed to give you a more polished look.

8. Avoid salty foods and caffeine, both of which can make you look bloated.

9. Put some pep in your step. If you’re healthy enough to exercise, fifteen to thirty minutes can energize you and get your blood flowing giving you a healthy glow.

10. Clean your face and moisturize before bed and sleep on a satin pillowcase. Avoid sleeping on your side or stomach, but rather try to rest on your back.

Even if you only practice a few of these tips, you should look brighter and refreshed!

12 Ways to Delay the Aging Process

Written by Ageless Moms on May 29th, 2009

Hello moms, how about “delaying” aging and looking as younger as possible?

12 Ways to Delay Aging

1. Wear sunscreen every day.
2. Apply sunscreen liberally.
3. Don’t forget your legs.
4. Don’t rely on SPF-enhanced makeup.
5. Choose sunglasses with UV protection. Good sunglasses help prevent cataracts and they also keep you from squinting
6. Avoid smoky situations. If you smoke, quit. And nonsmokers should be aware that chronic exposure to secondhand smoke can damage skin.
7. Be conscious of repetitive movements. Between smiling, frowning, and talking, your face makes thousands of movements a day.
8. Stop picking! As you age, acne scars often end up looking more like wrinkles.
9. Cleanse with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs).
10. Use an anti-aging cream at night.
11. Try a weekly exfoliation treatment.
12. Remember the rest of your body.

Butterflies Take Flight

Moms mentor moms back into the workforce

Are you a “butterfly?” You are, says Bradi Nathan, if you’re a mother who is seeking to return to the workforce or simply striving to achieve work-life balance. A mother of two young boys, Nathan, originally from Harrington Park, is co-founder of MyWorkButterfly, a ground-breaking social-networking site she launched with new friend and co-founder Terry Starr, also a mother of two. Dubbed “Facebook for Moms,” the first online community built exclusively for moms is spreading its wings.

The women were introduced by a mutual friend at a Border’s bookstore last August. Nathan was in the store researching an idea for an online community where women could network with one another; Starr, an HR. advertising and Internet-marketing executive, was in search of a French- English dictionary for a friend’s daughter.

“Terry saw the book I was holding, called Internet Riches, and handed me her business card,” Nathan recalls.

As they chatted, they discovered they had sons the same age, in the same grade at the same school. The realization further fueled Nathan’s belief that mothers needed an online community in which to connect and empower one another.

“I devoured the pages of that book and called Terry in the morning to share an idea. I told her 1 have an idea that I haven’t even told my husband. I haven’t even said it out loud.’ We met again the next day and the rest, as they say, is history,” Nathan says.

Both brought significant strengths to the table. Eight years ago, Nathan, a former advertising executive, launched For You Two, a mommy-and-me class where she met “lots of moms, many still on maternity leave, just trying to figure out what they wanted to do next.” she says.
Starr had spent nearly three decades working full time. Since having her children, she’s maintained a “do-it-all” philosophy that has seen her through with boundless energy and enthusiasm. Armed with business acumen and intuitive mothering instincts, they set out to build MyWorkButterfly.

“The timing could not have been better,” says Starr. “My agency, Success Communications, was already building social-networking sites for its clients. Bradi’s idea, combined with the agency’s expertise, was a perfect fit. I jumped right in.”

Incredibly, there are more than 100 million social-networking Internet sites.

“The world of social networking is so vast, it would be almost impossible to follow it fully,” says Starr. “But ours is truly a niche site. It’s been called ‘Facebook for Moms.” Interestingly, though, MyWorkButterfly takes the Facebook formula many steps further. The main difference? Three hundred pages of content on topics ranging from health and nutrition to fashion, finance and fitness. There’s also editorial on parenting, volunteerism, travel and beauty, plus vast resources on everything from adult education to child and elder care. And, of’ course, as the site’s content revolves around mothers and work, there’s also a comprehensive job board, networked with more than 1,000 other career sites, listing upwards of 3,000 job opportunities on any given day.

WINGED VICTORY

MyWorkButterfly quickly gained ground, Since its January 2009 launch, the site has signed up more than 1,500 members throughout the U.S. and Canada and as far away as England, Australia, Italy and India. Credit goes to the pair’s knack for courting celebrity moms to provide inspiration and content, cultivating corporate and association partnerships, and forging real friendships with its members.

“When a woman joins MyWorkButterfly, she receives a welcome email from one of us. It’s not auto-generated. It’s a personal message that encourages them to delve right into the site and, if they’ve told us a little bit about themselves, we even direct them to things on the site that we think will be of interest,” says Starr.

Among the site’s enthusiastic celebrity partners and contributors is Malaak Compton-Rock, a passionate philanthropist and wife of comedian Chris Rock.
POWER MOMS Lisa Monfried: Terry Starr, co-founder, MyWorkButterfly; Helaine Kay; and Bradi Nathan, co-founder, MyWorkButterfly revel in being able to help women re-enter the workforce after childbirth.

All in Clover

Mother and daughter “shopgirls” find success on the same block.

Five years ago Kris Hermance posed this burning question to her daughter, Emily: “In an ideal world, what would you like to do?” The question came on the heels of Emily’s sudden decision to give the heave-ho to corporate America. Although she loved the hustle and bustle of Wall Street, the long hours and frenetic pace eventually took their toll. A stint on the New York Stock Exchange and at Citigroup had left the 23-year-old burned out and unfulfilled. At a career crossroads, Emily turned to the one arena where she always felt the most connected: the fashion world. So it came as no surprise to her mom when she blurted out her final answer: “I want to own my own shop.” Armed with new purpose and focus, Emily did just that.

“As soon as 1 said the words, I knew that I wanted to open a high-end accessories boutique. Being from Ridgewood, I wanted the shop to be close to home. My mom and I drove around the next day looking for storefronts to rent and, within in a few hours, found the perfect spot on the corner of Franklin Turnpike in Ho-Ho-Kus,” recalls Emily of the location once occupied by Regal Antiques. In August 2004, with family and friends at her side, she opened the doors to her chic boutique, BB Clover, cleverly named for her two pet bunnies. Five years later, BB Clover (and the bunnies) are still hopping merrily long as is Emily, who, now at 28, is entrenched on the block. Married last September, Emily is happily ensconced in the burbs, living just a hop, skip and a jump away from the shop in a charming Tudor home she shares with her husband, Nick Spahr and puppy, Max. In her short but productive tenure, this retail-biz owner has built a large and loyal customer base that is always searching for the bold and the beautiful. “I have always tried to bring in new fashion lines every year and have expanded my original vision of the shop,” says Emily of her key decision to carry top-end clothing lines like Milly, Tibi and Tory Burch. Is she sometimes in need of a little inspiration? No problem, says Emily who turns to her mom. “She has an amazing eye for detail and a great passion for decorating and design. My mom is my sounding board.”

MOM GETS INTO THE ACT

Last year, a storefront came up for rent just three spaces away from BB Clover, and Emily immediately thought of the question that was asked of her years ago. But this time she thought of her mother, who, faced with “an empty nest,” seemed a little restless -and appeared to be at her own crossroads. Emily looked at her mom and said, “Mom, in an ideal world what would you like to do?” Without missing a beat Kris answered “I would like to own a home accessories shop.” Emily countered with, “Do I have the perfect spot for you!” With that, mother and daughter hit the ground running. In October of last year, with the support and encouragement of her husband Ron and her children, Kris opened BB Clover Home, an upscale home and gift boutique featuring antique and reproduction furniture, objects d’art and whimsies. “Owning your own business is a big challenge,” says Kris, “especially in this difficult economy, but 1 have a wonderful staff — all friends from Ridgewood who help me to get the job done.” It is a dream come true, says Kris of being able to work so closely with her daughter, to catch up on the day-to-day while grabbing a light breakfast at a nearby café. Adds Emily, “I can honestly say my mom is my best friend. I feel so lucky to have her three doors down from me.”

BB Clover is located at 181 F. Franklin Turnpike, Ho-Ho-Kus, (201) 251-9800.
